Valletta International PianoCompetition 2018

Students are invited to participate in the Valletta International Piano Competition 2018, which is going to be held  between  8 -11 February 2018 at the Temi Zammit Hall of the Mediterranean Conference Centre and Pallazzo Perreira.

Categories & Programm

Young:

Category  A  –     7 – 9   years    programme duration:  4 min
Category  B  –   10 – 12  years    programme duration:  8 min

Junior:

Category  C  –   13 – 15  years    programme duration:  12 min
Category  D  –   16 – 18   years   programme duration:  15 min

Senior:

Category  E  –   19 – 23   years   programme duration: 20 min ( 1st Round ), 20 min ( 2nd Round )
Category  F –    24 – 28   years   programme duration:  20 min ( 1st Round ), 20 min ( 2nd Round )

 

Repertoire

Programme  must include  2 ( two ) contrasting  piano works  of  2 ( two )  different styles:  baroque,  classical, romantic  or contemporary.  For example:
1 option:   classical movement  and  modern work
2 option:   baroque and  romantic work
Competitors  may also  include a piece written by  any of  Maltese composer.

Full details of each piece/work of the applicant’s repertoire must be listed and should include:

  1. Name of composer
  2. Full title of the piece
  3. Catalogue/Opus Number
  4. Movement
  5. Approximate Timing

The repertoire may not be altered after Monday  1st  January 2018. If competitors wish to make any changes to their repertoire before this date, they must post or email a typed copy of their full repertoire programme (individual  changes cannot be sent separately).
Repeats are left to the artistic discretion of the competitor. Repertoire  preferred to be performed from memory.
Each participant can have an acoustic rehearsal in the Concert Hall  (not longer  than 10 minutes).

An application Fee

An application fee of  100 EUR ( Category A, B )  and  120 EUR ( Category C, D, E, F )  should be paid at the time of registration to the Competition by cheque or online by credit card. In case of participants’ resignations application fees will not be refund.  All bank charges/fees are the responsibility of the applicant and are not to be deducted from the EUR 100 and EUR 120.00  entrance fee.  Applicants will be asked to pay any short fall if a total  amount of application fee  is not received.

Documents

– Applicants should retain copies of all material sent, as the Competition cannot return any materials or accept responsibility for any documents lost.
– The Competition takes no responsibility if applications are lost; applicants are encouraged to use recorded delivery or registered post.
– An acknowledgement will be sent to each applicant by email upon receipt of the completed application.
– The selection panel reserves the right to request additional information from an applicant.
– Biographical details will be checked by the selection panel. Inaccurate or misleading biographical information may lead to a Competitor’s disqualification.
– Only fully completed applications will be submitted to the selection panel.
– All parts of the application, including any references must be completed in English.

Christmas with Wayne Marshall & The New Choral Singers

In a feast of Christmas music The New Choral Singers will be presenting the 20th edition of their annual seasonal concert ‘Musical Tidings’.

World acclaimed BBC Proms virtuoso organist and conductor, Wayne Marshall is currently chief conductor of WDR Funkhausorchester Cologne and Organist and associate artist of the Bridgewater Hall.

Under the musical guidance of Mauro Farrugia, this being his first Christmas with the group, the choir has carefully prepared an expansive range of Christmas carols that are bound to appeal to audiences of all ages.

As in prior years, and in the spirit of the season, the audience will be invited to join the choir in song for some traditional favourites.

Entrance: Free of charge (no booking is required). A retiring collection will be held at the end of both concerts

Corto Maltese: The Ballad of the Salty Sea

Teatru Manoel Education Programme: Toi Toi and Valletta 2018 Foundation are producing a commissioned piece with a score by Monique Krüs and libretto by Tama Matheson on Thursday 20th September and Saturday 22nd September 2018. Corto Maltese, the most enigmatic hero of the Italian adventure comic series, known as ‘the rogue with the heart of gold’ and created by Hugo Pratt, is the protagonist for the first ever staged opera production of the first adventure: The Ballad of the Salty Sea.

This is the fourth annual youth opera, produced through a match-funding initiative with the Valletta 2018 Foundation and as part of the Cultural Programme for Valletta 2018 – European Capital of Culture.

GAUDETE! – Malta’s Only Male Choir – Christmas Concert!

Cappella Sanctae Catharinae’s annual Christmas concert is back! Gaudete  offers some glorious festive choral music and beautiful carols.

Saturday 16th December @ 19:30 – Parish Church of St Nicholas, Siġġiewi

Sunday 17th December @ 11:00 – Church of Our Lady of Victory, Valletta

This year the choir will be joined by soprano Danielle Ciantar. The repertoire includes Giovanni Battista Crivelli’s 17th century Christmas pastorale Salvete Pastores, as well as such carols as I Wonder as I Wander and Personent Hodie. The choir will also be reviving an old Maltese carol, collected from Birkirkara two years ago, called Kant lil Betlem. Moreover, the choir organises these concerts to raise funds for various worthy philanthropic or heritage causes, and this year’s Christmas concerts will be no exception.

The Saturday evening concert in Siġġiewi  will be helping to collect funds for the restoration of the chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows inside the parish church.The following morning, the choir will be collecting funds to help Din l-Art Ħelwa in their massive restoration project at the church of Our Lady of Victory.

The Ian Tomlin Napier/Malta Scholarship

The Ian Tomlin Napier/Malta Scholarship will be holding auditions towards the end of November this year for those students interested in applying for a four-year undergraduate course in Music (BMus Hons) at the Ian Tomlin Academy, Napier University, Edinburgh. The Scholarship is open to Maltese student musicians.
Important Notes:
Vocalists/Instrumentalists are required to have a standard of practical skill that
equates to an Advanced Level / Grade VIII / MQF Level 4 standard. Although we
do not require that the examination has been taken, we would expect that
candidates are able to demonstrate consistent performance at this level.
Composers will be required to submit a portfolio of works prior to the audition if
their application is accepted.
All applicants will require a pass in Music Theory at Ordinary Level / Grade V /
MQF Level 3 standard by the time the course begins in September 2018.
All Applicants should be in possession of two ‘A’ Levels or pending ‘A’ Level results

‘The Mediterranean Dimension’ – a project which is funded by the Arts Council Malta and Valletta 2018 Foundation Multi-Annual Support Grant

The project is in its second year and will culminate in a research encounter, intercultural residency and concert in March. At this stage of the project, however, we are organising the Malta Auditions for the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra. Every year, almost 600 musicians apply to one of the auditions organized in twenty countries of the Mediterranean and some 100 young talents are selected to participate in one of the MYO’s sessions in Aix-en-Provence.​
Auditions for the Symphonic Session are being held on Sunday 26th November and applications are now open. The deadline to apply for an audition is Sunday 19th November 2017.
Ahead of these auditions, we are also organising an ‘Orchestra Auditions Workshop’ on Thursday 16th November at 12:00 at the Department of Music Studies, University of Malta. Young musicians wishing to improve their audition skills are invited to attend. “PARADE & the Velvet Gentleman” within ŻiguŻajg

The highlight of the programme is a new version of the historical ballet “PARADE” premiered in 1917 – music by Erik Satie / scenography and costume design inspired by the original artworks of Pablo Picasso.
The music performance will feature the four-hands piano version of the score.
The programme will include other important piano works by Satie to present a portrait of this unique composer.
