INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC COURSES

New students who are 6 or 7 years old by 31st December can only apply for the Introduction to Music I.

Only students who attended Introduction to Music I last year may apply for Introduction to Music II.


MUSIC COURSES

New students have to be 8 years or older by 31st December to choose a Music Knowledge and Understanding class and start playing an instrument with the exception of bass guitar, contemporary guitar, contemporary voice, classical voice and jazz improvisation.

New students choosing to play bass guitar, contemporary guitar, contemporary voice, classical voice and jazz improvisation have to be 13 years or older by 31st December.

New beginner students who wish to start playing an instrument need to apply for a Music Knowledge and Understanding Preliminary class according to their age group first, and then choose their preferred instrument/s.

New beginner students who wish to start playing bass guitar, contemporary guitar, contemporary voice, classical voice, and jazz improvisation need to apply for Introduction to Jazz Knowledge and Understanding and then choose their preferred instrument/s.

Music Knowledge and Understanding 8+ years or Jazz Knowledge and Understanding 13+ Years is obligatory for ALL students (both new and renewal) who wish to attend the Johann Strauss School of Music and play an instrument. Therefore, a student needs to apply for a Music Knowledge and Understanding or Jazz Knowledge and Understanding course first, and then choose their preferred instrument/s.

Students are exempted from Music / Jazz Knowledge and Understanding classes only upon presentation of certificate at MQF Level 4 (Grade 8) in Music / Jazz Knowledge and Understanding or equivalent.

Students applying for Choir 8+ years need to attend be Music Knowledge and Understanding at the School of Music.

Students who are 16+ years need to pay a fee of €34.69 per year per practical course and €34.69 per year for the knowledge and understanding course. Receipt payment must be presented upon the first lesson.

All new students are auditioned. The date and time of auditions are announced in September and auditions are held between the last week of September and the first week of October. Students will be ranked and accepted according to available vacancies. Accepted students will be provided with the lesson day and time by their respective teacher. Students will remain on the waiting list and called for according to vacancies within the respective scholastic year of application.


LEISURE COURSES

Adult students (25 years and over) only may opt to apply for a three-year leisure course in an instrument without sitting for examinations. Music Knowledge and Understanding classes are not obligatory for those adult students who have a basic knowledge of music.


CHOOSING THE RIGHT CLASS

New beginner students should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Preliminary according to age group.

New beginner students taking Jazz Improvisation, Contemporary Guitar and Bass Guitar are recommended to apply for Introduction to Jazz Knowledge and Understanding.

Students who started late during last scholastic year or failed Music Knowledge and Understanding Preliminary should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Preliminary according to age group.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Preliminary 8-10 should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 1 according to age group.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Preliminary / Grade 1 (11+ years) or failed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 2 should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 2 according to age group.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 1 should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 2 according to age group.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 2 or failed Music Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 3 should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 3 according to age group.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 3 or failed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 4 should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 4.

Students who passed Introduction to Jazz Knowledge and Understanding or failed Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 4 should apply for Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 4.

Students who passed Grade 4 or failed Music Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 5 should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 5.

Students who passed Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 4 or failed Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 5 should apply for Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 5.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 5 or failed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 6 should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 6.

Students who passed Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 5 or failed Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 6 should apply for Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 6.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 6 or failed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 7 should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 7.

Students who passed Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 6 or failed Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 7 should apply for Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 7.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 7 or failed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 8 should apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 8.

 Students who passed Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 7 should apply for Jazz Knowledge and Understanding Grade 8.

Students who already obtained MQF Level 4 (Grade 8) or equivalent in Music Knowledge and Understanding / Jazz Knowledge and Understanding and want to learn an instrument may apply for Music Knowledge and Understanding Exempt Class.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 8 and Music Performance Grade 6 may apply for Diploma Musicology.

Students who passed Music Performance Grade 8 and Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 6 may apply for Diploma Performance.

Students who passed Music Knowledge and Understanding Grade 8 and Music Performance Grade 6 may apply for Diploma Composition.


TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Courses may be postponed or cancelled at the discretion of the Director for Lifelong Learning and Early School Leavers.

Once your registration is accepted, you will need to follow the regulations issued by the Directorate for Lifelong Learning and the Visual and Performance Arts Schools.

  • Failure to comply with these rules could lead to you being asked to discontinue a course without the right for you to receive a refund of the payment for your registration payment.
  • Anyone who is found attending a course without having paid will be asked to leave, even if the participant is then ready to pay for the course.
  • The directorate does not assume responsibility if an educator terminates his/ or her service. The directorate will, however, take all the necessary measures needed to secure a replacement as soon as possible.
  • Participants can only apply for one course on a particular subject.
  • Unless otherwise indicated, participants are reminded that the lessons will be delivered in Maltese or English.
