Cappella Sanctae Catherinae – Malta’s only all male choir

together with Compagnia San Michele

and the Notarial Archives Resource Council

is organising an event of early music and history in

Birgu on Wednesday 13th July.

This promises to be a wonderful evening in the newly restored Birgu ditch (il-Foss), with Renaissance music and informative talks about notarial acts, their conservation, and relevance from a historical perspective. A part of the evening will also be dedicated to the presentation of a collaborative project between the Cappella Sanctae Catherinae and the Notarial Archives. The choir has, over the past months, sponsored the restoration of part of a manuscript by Notary Salvatore Ciantar. Ciantar was active in Birgu from 1594-1657, and a number of his volumes have remarkable parchment covers made of recycled liturgical manuscripts, which were probably discarded after whole sections of the music and text became redundant following Church reforms brought about by the Council of Trent.
