Joe Debono studied classical piano with Mro.J Psaila and he discovered jazz through his uncle Charles Sciberras a renowned local jazz drummer. He attended lessons in jazz improvisations at the School of Music (1990-91) tutored by Paul Abela and more recently at the Conservatoire de Musique de Luxembourg (2009-11)

During his music studies at the University of Malta he met Nicky Doublet and Sandro Zerafa with whom he had his first appearance on the stage of the Malta Jazz Festival. The pinnacle of this formative phase came with Charles City Gatt who served the dual role of mentor and drummer.

His recent collaborations include ‘Joe Camilleri Trio’, Carlo Muscat’s project ‘The Sound Catalogues’ along with Lionel Boccara, Mátyás Szanday and Daniele Raimondi, and presently he is working on new material for the latin band ‘Komokuba’. His most recent venture was a series of concerts in collaboration with Canadian top jazz musicians as part of the CHOGM 2015 celebrations held in Toronto and Montreal. Joe Debono is very active playing overseas and at local venues and is currently giving jazz improvisation classes at the Johann Strauss School of Music.
