Miriam Cauchi is a firmly established Maltese soprano, making a name for herself both in her native country and overseas. Graduating with full honours from the Sofia State Music Academy in Bulgaria under the tuition of Prof Blagovesta Dobreva in 1997, she furthered her studies in Milan with Juliette Bisazza Zanni and attended master classes with Magda Olivero in Barcelona. She is the recipient of the Gheorghi Slatev Cherkin Competition and the Bulgarian XIV National Competition Svetoslav Obretenov. Possessing a rich, clear and velvety voice enables her to tackle a wide range of repertoire from Italian bel canto opera, oratorio, to lieder and contemporary works.

Miriam has performed  at Astra Theatre, Aurora Theatre, Manoel Theatre, Mediterranean Conference Centre, St. John’s Co-Cathedral, Victoria International Arts Festival (Malta), Berlin Konzerthaus, Festival-Mitte-Europa (Germany), Maribor National Theatre (Slovenia),  Varna Theatre, Provadia Theatre, National Palace of Culture-NDK (Bulgaria), Tabor Theatre (Czech Republic), Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center (USA) and shared the stage in main operatic roles  with world renowned singers like Maria Guleghina, Francesca Patane, Joseph Calleja, Badri Maisuradze; worked with international conductors Lior Shambadal, Eric Hull, David Svec, Ivan Vulpe, Michalis Economou, Steven Mercurio, Brian Schembri; and directors Mario Corradi, and Marco Gandini.

Miriam Cauchi is also very much in demand for recitals with pianoforte and chamber ensembles. She is a consummate interpreter of lieder by composers as diverse as Rachmaninov, Dvořák, Fauré, Grieg, Liszt, Gershwin, and Richard Strauss. She is a major ambassador of Maltese vocal music, singing and recording important compositions by Abos, Camillieri, Diacono, Isouard, Vassallo, Vella and Zerafa. Operas performed to critical acclaim include L’Elisir d’Amore (Adina), Un Ballo in Maschera (Oscar), Pagliacci (Nedda), Le Villi (Anna), Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica), Turandot (Liù), La Boheme (Mimi), Rigoletto (Gilda), La Traviata (Violetta) and Otello (Desdemona). Successfully performed sacred, orchestral and chamber works include Handel’s Messiah, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Abos’s Stabat Mater, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Mass in C, Vassallo’s Requiem, Camilleri’s Pawlu ta Malta,  Lloyd Weber’s Requiem, Strauss’ Vier Letzte, Lieder Berg’s Sieben Frühe Lieder, Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No.5, Joseph Vella’s song cycle Dust on the Path (poems by Alistair Chalmers) Alex Vella Gregory’s song cycle Mill-Qamar sal-Qabar

She has at heart the educational aspect of singing and performing and is enthusiastic to work with young promising singers, coaching them in their development and careers. She currently holds the post of voice tutor at Malta’s main music institution, the Malta School of Music since 1999. In 2013 she was invited as the principal voice tutor to form part of the Manoel Theatre Youth Opera TMYO  within the Toi Toi educational programme.

Miriam’s latest CD release Riflessi – Art Songs from Malta is part of an ongoing project which includes also a series of concerts with the intention of promoting and nurturing the love for Maltese art songs.

On the 13th of December 2009 Miriam Cauchi was appointed to the National Order of Merit – M.O.M. This honour is given by the President of Malta to persons who distinguish themselves in their respective fields.
