Saxophone & Clarinet Festival

The Saxophone & Clarinet Festival is coming soon!

This year’s participants will have a unique opportunity to meet two internationally-acclaimed artists. Saxophonist Gilles Tressos (France) and clarinetist David Campbell (UK) will be in Malta for this event. The festival will consist of:

  • Group lessons – small groups of the same level.
  • Individual lessons – a limited number of individual lessons available.
  • Chamber groups – trios, quartets and other chamber formations.
  • Public workshops – technique and interpretation.
  • Ensembles – saxophone and clarinet ensembles.
  • Closing concert – featuring participants together with Gilles Tressos and David Campbell as soloists.

Welcome to Jazzy Malta

Arriving tourists yesterday received a jazzy welcome at the airport, three days before the 25th edition of the Malta Jazz Festival is held in Valletta. Students from the Johann Strauss School of Music launched the Jazz on the Fringe initiative, aimed at providing local artists with increased exposure. The initiative includes the Fringe Youth Ensemble, Malta Jazz Camp and the Malta Jazz Contest. More information at www.maltajazzfestival.org.

Scholarships for young pianists

Two scholarships are being offered for young pianists to participate in the 2nd International Piano Festival in Italy from August 9 to 19.

The grants include flights, accommodation and participation in master classes at the festival. The scholarships are being awar­ded by the European Foundation for Support of Culture with the support of Alexey Kononenko.

A selection process will be held on Wednesday at the Johann Strauss School of Music, Valletta.

Intermediate students are to present two contrasting pieces or movements for up to seven minutes. Advanced students are to present two to three contrasting pieces or movements for up to 14 minutes.

Those wishing to apply are to send an e-mail to info@eufsc.eu by Tuesday with the candidate’s name, age and programme to be presented. A €10 registration fee is to be paid on the day of the audition.

Open day at the Johann Strauss School of Music

Parents and students listening to a teacher play the piano are reflected in polished wood at the Johann Strauss School of Music, which yesterday held an open day at its new premises in Ħamrun. The school, previously located in Valletta, has been open for four decades and was set up in a collaboration between the governments of Malta and Austria.
