Malta International Music Festival 2018

The Malta International Music Festival 2018 will be held between 15th April and 1st May in Valletta – featuring highly acclaimed world-famous musicians. The festival offers a rich a varied programme including grand orchestral concerts with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra at the Republic Hall of the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

The European Foundation for Support of Culture has the pleasure to offer the School of Music  complimentary tickets for every concert for staff, students and their families – to be able to attend the concerts at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta as from Monday 16th April – on a daily basis (except 19th April) till 1st May.

Singers’ Artistic Tool Box – SATB 2018

The Voice Department within the Malta School of Music is proud to present – the Singers Artistic Tool Box 2018 (SATB 2018) which will be held on the 6th, 7th and 8th April 2018.

SATB 2018 will take place at the newly refurbished Poulenc Room situated in the Main Hall Block and in Rm 004 at the Malta School of Music in Hamrun. A central location with free parking accessibility.

This is a course aimed at Classical Voice soloists / choristers of varying ages interested in furthering their holistic skills on stage. It will introduce and develop 5 disciplines from the singer’s point of view.

Singers will have to possibility to work with Opera Singer Tatiana Lisnic, conductor Michael Laus, Pilates Instructor Sarah Jane Zrinzo, choreographer Dorian Mallia and make-up artist Jackie Grima. Each session would involve theoretical and practical aspects.

Extra individual sessions of 45 minutes duration could also be booked with Tatiana Lisnic, Sarah Jane Zrinzo, Dorian Mallia and Jackie Grima against an extra fee upon applying for the course.

Bel canto principles: Theory to practice

Breathing, projection, placement, expressing singing and a general approach on how to study music score.

Saturday 7th th April 2018

Michael Laus – Conductor

Singing Opera: A Conductor’s Perspective.

In this session, Mro Laus will discuss the collaboration between conductor and singers during the rehearsal period of an opera production. Tempos, articulation, phrasing and other matters of style will be discussed, with examples from operas by Mozart and Verdi. In the second part of the session, he will work with some of the participants in order to demonstrate how the issues discussed can be put in practice.

Pilates for singers

Based on Joseph Pilates’ methods  the workshop will focus on the following principles: Alignment, Breathing, Centring, Control, Precision, Stamina and Coordination/Flow.

Dorian Mallia – Choreographer

Mind and movement

This workshop is a great introduction for those who wish to develop an understanding of movement in performance. This session will cover all the basics from alignment and coordination to musicality and creativity. It will help to instill confidence in your performing skills. With the mind and body we create!

Valletta 2018 Capital of Culture is also resounding at the Malta School of Music with all sorts of classes and activities.  Just to mention a few:

Several class concerts are currently being held on various dates by respective performance teachers and their students.

 

15-25 March – Students and teachers from partnering school Emils Darzins Music School in Riga, Latvia will be visiting MSM and giving 4 concerts at the MSM Main Hall on:

17 and 22 March Solos Concert;

19 and 25 March Orchestra Concert;

6 April – Junior String Orchestra will be performing at the Central Library in Floriana; free entrance to all;

6, 7, 8 April – Singers Artistic Tool Box (SATB 2018) consisting of a 3 day course for Classical Voice Students;

9 April – Pianoforte Masterclasses by Alexander Frey in collaboration with the Gaulitana Festival;

9 April – String Masterclasses by Geza Silvay in collaboration with ESTA, Malta;

10, 12, 13 April – Flute Masterclasses by Andrea Kuypers;

10 April – Young Musicians’ Celebration Concert 2018 with the participation of Prep 2 Classes, MSM Young Singers, MSM Orchestra and other ensembles;

11 April – Music-Lecture celebrating Mikhail Lermontov in collaboration with Russian Centre for Science and Culture at the Poulenc Room;

13 April – Collaborative Concert with the Gozo Visual and Performing Arts and the Schola Cantorum Junior Choir at St Augustine’s Church in Rabat Gozo;

16-20 April – Clarinet Masterclasses by Gianluca Campagnolo;

20 April – Valletta 2018 Sounds Out Loud Final Concert at the MSM Main Hall with guest artists Mousse Gueye Ndiaye and several students from different schools;

22-29 April – MSM staff members to visit Emils Darzins School of Music in Riga;

4 May – MSM Young Singers’ and Flute Choir will be performing at the Central Library in Floriana; free entrance to all;

29 May – ONE VOICE Concert at the Main Hall – Project supported by the BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation Project.

British flautist Andrea Kuypers is returning to Malta this April, offering a series of flute lessons at the Malta School of Music. This is a fantastic opportunity for students and performers at all levels, and we encourage all those interested to apply to book in advance as places are limited. Dear Students / Parents / Guardians,

The Malta School of Music has embarked on an Erasmus+ project entitled MEETMusic Erasmus Education Training.

In the coming years, different teachers from the School of Music shall be travelling overseas for a week span for specialised professional development.

The second group will be leaving in a few days and apart from a Bon Voyage, please join me in wishing them a memorable professional experience.

In the near future, the School looks forward to engage into other EU projects which will involve and benefit its potential and committed students too.

Dear Renewal Students / Parents / Guardians,

 

Trust you had an enjoyable and restful summer break whilst practicing your instrument/s daily. Hope that now you are charged for the new scholastic year 2017-18 which is about to take off.

 

The School is rebranding and from now on it’s the Malta School of Music which falls under the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College – The National College for Further Education.

 

Music Knowledge and Understanding classes start from Monday 2nd October 2017 according to the day and time applied for. For this you may refer to your receipt of application received via email. Please note that changes in class, day and time may not be accepted.

 

Voice and Instrumental lessons start as from Wednesday 4th October 2017. Your teacher will contact closer to date to settle the day and time of your lesson.

 

Books and journals are available for purchase at the main office room 007 as from 25th September 2017.

Office hours 9.00 a.m. till 12.00 p.m. (noon) and from 3.00 p.m. till 6.00 p.m.
